Doesn`t it sound like Kareen?
Short of vowels I would have written it like this: كارن
At the moment I`m using http://www.gate2home.com/?language=ar
Where can I find a virtual Arabic keyboard which includes the short vowels
(fathah, dammah, kasrah), or how can I paste them in?

That is a good point J. It is a situation where judgement has be to used. Having said that, the usual practice with foreign names is to use long - rather than short- vowels. So Alif (a) Yaa (e) and waw (o) would be used instead of Fatha (short a) Kasra (short e) and Damma (short o). This practice is used because in media prints short vowels are not used and readers have to rely on long vowels.
While كارين may be misread as Kareen
كارن may also be misread as Karn. But the usual practice is to write it as كارين.
I think you were looking for short kasra so as to write the script as كارِن which is the nearest to perfection, but unfortunately no one really use it that way these days.
We may ask Karen how she was advised to write her name in Arabic ...
There are other complications with writing foreign names in Arabic, which we can have fun exploring in the future.

Supposing that you are using Windows XP, you can use the On-Screen Keyboard Utility that can be found in Start > Programs > Accessories > Accesiblity Tools, or Start > Run > then you type OSK and press Enter. You will need to have the accesibility tools installed. You will also have to add an Arabic keyboard layout from Control Panel > Reginal and Language Options. Note that you need to check the "install files for comples xcript..." check box under Languages tab before you can be able to add the Arabic layout.

Thank you Gogo!
I`ve found a way to put in diacritical marks:
shift+q = fathah
shift+w = tanwiin belfathah
shift+e = damma
shift+r = tanwiin beldam
shift+a = kasra
shift+s = tanwiin belkasr
shift+x = sukuun
shift+` (the key beside the "1") = shadda
When needing to put shadda + another mark, put the shadda first.

Lisa,
The two words are:
علاء
الى الأبد
Please reconsider your plans. Have the name engraved on a gift but be careful before you decide on other uses. You know what I mean.
