For the first time I visited the mosque that is in the middle on Luxor temple and was made most welcome. It was fascinating to see a bird eye view of the temple from the door that opens onto the court some 20 foot below. The mosque is dedicated to Abu Haggag and as well as his tomb the tomb of his two sons is there. There was no entrance fee but a donation was given to the Iman.

Hi Jane, so glad to see this post. I have been trying to find out since August about visiting this mosque. When I was in Luxor this summer I was told by a guide that I could not go into this mosque at all. Though I had seen somone, other than a local, standing in the doorway you are referring to and even took a photo. The following day I made my way around to the entrance of the mosque, but there was no time to visit as the cruise boat I was due to leave within the half hour.

Guess I will have to try again the next time I am in Luxor.

Goldie they were so welcoming, I was a bit dubious about going there but shouldn't have worried at all. We were told road closed as we went down but persevered and were so glad we did. I wrote a bit more on my blog www.luxornews.net

Oh yeah the road was closed alright even then. I had to work my way around all kinds of barriers and equipment, but I managed to get to the base of the steps to the entrance. The people who were coming in and out were very friendly and probably wondering what in the heck a "blondie" like me was doing there. I wish I would have had the time to go in....but next time for sure ! !

That is exactly where we were standing, in that doorway

I almost went in the Mosque when I was wandering around in 2003. Everyone there was, indeed, friendly, and I was asked if I would like to go inside. It seemed going in would be an intrusion, however. I am glad to hear that it would be OK to accept their invitation. It would have been amazing, I'm sure. Next time...

The park fronting the mosque was lovely and charming with children playing. Another time I took photos through the gate as I walked by. I could see the contemporary mosque tower, the ancient one, and the tip of the most ancient obelisque. Awesome span of history.
