Von Däniken comes under the same category as Piazzi Smythe & the other Pyramidiots; from Wilde's coment "If we have Cypriots & Smyrniots, why not Pyramidiots",in that he insults the Egyptians by claiming that they couldn't have dreamed up & constructed the pyramids (they only ever mention Giza & forget the 80 odd other pyramids to be found in Egypt) without inspiration from some outside agency.

As one who was privileged to visit the excavations of the Cemetery of the Pyramid Builders, at Giza, with Dr Zahi Hawass (9 years ago now - God, I feel old) & watch them digging one of the skeletons out of the sand, I can state with absolute certainty that the Egyptians not only built the pyramids but were inspired to do so by their own solar religion & their cult of royalty, in The Old Kingdom.

The King was, from predynastic times, seen as being the incarnation of the God Horus; only later did he become the son of Ra, & there was a notion that he would join with Horus in the after life (at this time only the King was seen as being able to enter the afterlife, with everyone else experiencing it through his success in achieving his place within it).

The proto-dynastic Kings were buried in monumental tombs; probably at Abydos(& very impressive monuments they must have been), though this is disputed, & these eventually took the form of mastabas; from the Arabic word for bench, but, with the move of the capital from Nekhen (opposite modern el Kab - ancient Nekheb) & the existence of, what are generally accepted to be, mastaba tombs of the high officials, it was necessary to make the King's tomb stand out from the already crowded necropolis.

Therefore, the architect Imhotep came up with the idea of superimposing 4 mastabas on top of each other; the original form of the step-pyramid, later increasing this to 6 steps. This provided the King; (Netcher-Ikhet) (Djoser), with the added bonus of a stairway to his; as was hen seen, destiny amongst the circum-polar stars.

Later, the influence of solar cults; & the Ben-Ben stone in Heliopolis (ancient Iunu) would lead to the linking of the King with the sun God Ra & the desire to create a tomb that was an earthly representation of the rays of the sun; whilst still preserving an attachment to the older ideas of an afterlife amongst the stars.

As DNA analysis proves that the people who built the Giza pyramids were the same people living in the Nile valley of Egypt today, there is no need for ascribing them to Hebrews, Atlanteans, spacemen or sub-Saharan Africans, They were & remain the sole work & inspiration of the Egyptians themselves & all credit is due to this wonderful people & the civilisation they created; at a time when Europeans were still painting themselves blue, for all that they achieved.
